Fingerprint Scanners

Whether you are a small business enterprise or a large federal government agency, physical and logical security is probably among the highest of your ongoing concerns. At Fulcrum Biometrics we specialize in providing top of the line fingerprint scanners that can be easily installed into your existing computer and access control systems to give you tighter security within your organization.

When deciding what fingerprint scanner is right for your PC’s, laptop or access control systems for you or your business, you should know about the various kinds of fingerprint scanners available on the market to choose from. The two most popular types employ optical and capacitive technologies. Both technologies have the ability to deliver high quality scanning and accurate images and deliver the same function of acquiring an accurate image of an individual's fingerprint which is then used by the fingerprint matching algorithm to locate a match for the user in a pre-registered database.

Optical Fingerprint Scanners
Optical scanners work by using a CCD or CMOS imager along with an illuminator and lens. The sensors capture the image of a finger when it is pressed onto the surface of the fingerprint scanners lens. This image will be processed and then used for comparison of other enrolled fingerprints in the system. Two specific models of optical scanners that Fulcrum Biometrics offers are the FB80 Pro USB 2.0 http://www.fulcrumbiometrics.com/developers-kits/verifinger-5.0-sdk.html and the Digital Persona U.are.U 4000B.

FB80 Pro USB 2.0

  • Compact and sturdy, uses light intensity to adjust to a scanned fingerprint’s characteristics no matter if wet, rough or blurred to optimize a captured fingerprint image.

Digital Persona U.are.U 4000B

  • The most widely used fingerprint scanner on the market, this scanner is small and reliable with superior image quality for personal or office use.

Capacitive Fingerprint Scanners

Another type of fingerprint scanner is the capacitance scanner. A capacitance scanner measures the electrical currents on a fingerprint sensor chip to form an image of the fingerprint. When a person places their finger onto the scanner, tiny plates act as conductors beneath the scanner and communicate information through an electrical circuit and sensors to “read” the map of the fingerprint. This technology is newer than the traditional optical technology but not necessarily better. Each application of fingerprint technology requires a careful evaluation in order to determine what sensor types are best suited for the tasks.
One excellent capacitive fingerprint scanner distributed by Fulcrum Biometrics is the Zvetco P5000. This high quality sensor uses a capacitive chip designed and manufactured by Upek. This chip features high definition sensing, pixel level signal amplification and live layer sensing technology.
